Tiddo Bakker’s In Vena Verbum (Message in a Vein), is a kinetic metal sculpture, with motors and circuitry activated by a houseplant that is stimulated by light. At his eponymous studio that is affiliated with Collaboration O’, Bakker enlisted the help of physicist Henk Jalink and his team at the Centre for BioSystems Genomics to measure the activity and stress level of the plant and transmit that energy digitally to cause the sculpture to move.

“We wanted the wood to appear as natural as possible, so leaving the larch untreated was the first choice,” Bas explained. But the shape of the house would make the wood turn gray unevenly, so they blackened the larch. “The clients were excited with the dark color as it helps the house blend into the trees. They didn’t want the anything excessive or showy.” But blackened timber comes with its own challenges. Since it absorbs more heat, a larger air cavity was built behind the wood to keep it cool.

British photographer Julian Broad has contributed to Vanity Fair for 25 years. He got his start with commissions for Arena and The Face magazines. Though he primarily shoots portraits,he segued into architectural photography to document the Norton Residence in London for this issue. Broad was drawn to architect William Tozer’s updated design for the kitchen, which includes “a huge window at the end—perfect for watching squirrels.” If you could add one thing to your kitchen, what would it be? “I’d quite like a kitchen designed around a bank of green Fritz Haller cabinets.”

As a sporty vehicle in the SUV segment, the Porsche Cayenne has been challenging automotive conventions for over a decade. Four new 2015 versions, the Cayenne Diesel, Cayenne S, Cayenne Turbo, and Cayenne S E-Hybrid, promise to expand upon that legacy.

Anura was initially created for the Wallpaper* handmade series in collaboration with leather manufacturer Santiago Gonzalez. The commission resulted in a stool with a "submissive, animal-like posture." The sulfur-colored version is the latest edition.

To create Pose, Bakker considered "the most elemental and the quickest way to create a bench: two vertical parts with a horizontal bar on top of them, a U shape upside down."

Stelton Pure Black Knives, $55–$129 at the Dwell Store Stelton’s Pure Black Knives are cutting edge kitchen tools. Each knife is forged from a single piece of stainless steel, so the handles morph into the blades without the interruption of a different material and color. The Pure Black Knives collection includes a large chef’s knife, small chef’s knife, bread knife, santuko knife, and utility knife.

The glowing home defines its environment as much as it responds to it. Its T-shape reduces the size of its footprint, thus sparing two timeworn trees and minimizing foundation costs - a real concern when building on Arkansas's notoriously unstable soil.

Over a 25-year career, Margie Ruddick has creatively defied convention to pursue landscape design on her own terms.

Flatware gets a distinctively Dutch touch with this set of utensils by Richard Hutten for Royal VKB, which give the staid, straight lines of basic silverware a playful peephole. The stainless steel set is one of the iD / Cutlery collections from designers which also include Gijs Bakker, Atelier Bow Wow, and Ineke Hans.

Using prefabricated elements, Bas van Bolderen Architectuur and Studio Puisto Architects were able to complete the dwelling in just eight months so the couple’s lives could return to normal. Wall elements were constructed in Germany, then transported to the Netherlands, where the house was erected in just one week.

The Tinbeerwah house and studio keep a low profile among the site’s eucalyptus trees.

In the living area, a 2010 Vertigo lamp by Constance Guisset hangs above a 1974 Gijs Bakker Strip table; the residents believe the floor lamp in the foreground is Murano glass. Dark panels of metal, left behind by the previous homeowners, were stored outside until a rich patina developed. Now they hide a library.

The Hands Off installation at the Museum of Craft and Design in San Francisco included Martijn Koomen’s wood-and-glass cylindrical pavilion and Tiddo Bakker’s kinetic sculptural chandelier In Vena Verbum, hanging from a three-legged wood arch.

Bakker’s girlfriend, fashion and furniture designer Brecht Duijf, sometimes suggests colors for designs. “I would not have been able to think of these colors,” Bakker says, holding up tiny ceramic chips she selected to determine the palette for Jug, a water carafe with a neck bent over a drinking cup, looking like a primordial creature feeding its young.

Tonus is a sculptural stool made in 2010 from a solid block of oak that continues to swell and shrink like a “living, breathing” creature.
