For the kitchen, American cherry wood was used to create cabinets that establish a warm and sturdy tone. Each piece of lumber was purchased at auction by the Brillharts and stored in New Hampshire, before being shipped to Miami and milled on site. The wood island is painted black to provide a point of visual contrast.
To create a better flow, they took out the wall between the kitchen and dining rooms and added a peninsula where they could put bar stools for people to hang out while they’re cooking. They also moved the range closer to the peninsula to create a better layout for entertaining. Finally, the installed new quartz countertops and cabinets. They salvaged some of the old cabinets and repurposed them in the laundry room downstairs.

What are some places the children's and parents' needs dovetail in the design?

There was a lot of concern about minimizing clutter. There's acres of cabinetry to put things away. I think that helps to keep the kids calm. Clutter is really hard on autistic kids. Being able to keep things clean seems to really help. This place had to be user-friendly for the kids, parents, and tutors.

A series of Masters chairs by Philippe Starck and Eugeni Quitllet for Kartell enliven the dining area of Don and Linda Shafer’s hilltop prefab home in Marfa, Texas. The walnut Light Extending Table by Matthew Hilton for De La Espada straddles the black steel band “marriage line” that connects the two modules that make up the living area. Two Hope pendants by Luceplan hang overhead.
The living area incorporates wood, marble, and porcelain; a materials palette that is carried through throughout the home.
From the stained wallpaper, to the lacquered floorboards, to the timber joinery, every element has been hand finished using traditional techniques.
