The modern dining room is where the universal ritual of breaking bread brings us together. The projects below showcase elegant configurations and designs that encompass chairs and tables, bars and stools, lighting, flooring, and fireplaces.

Once a musty crawl space, the new porch features a custom built-in table and Cane-line Breeze chairs.

The home’s elevator features a glass cab and exposed mechanical elements. The already high Victorian ceilings were extended vertically to the top of the attic’s pitch, where a skylight was added.

The architects created the illusion of more space by opening up the floor plan, repositioning the staircase and introducing sight lines to the large windows on the south side. Recurring black accents—from the dining room’s Serge Mouille light fixture to its tall bookcases—contrast the brightness of the crisp white walls. Walnut floors and lighter wood furniture like the Klaus Willhelm table and Hans Wegner Wishbone chairs cozy up the home, while colorful objects animate it. “We strongly believe that people do not need more space, they just need better-designed space,” Dubbeldam says.

Ipe paneling and concrete floors continue into the living area, where a photograph by Scott McFarland hangs above the fireplace. Surrounding the dining table, by Riva 1920, are walnut chairs the couple found locally.
Integrated, dimmable LED lighting provides even light throughout the space and extends to the cantilevered patio outside.
Max devised a movable plywood beam that holds a trio of pendant lamps to swing down as needed.  A wood piece covered in chalkboard paint hides the electrical panel. “Slate was too expensive,” he says.
The living space is equipped with a home cinema and a mini bar to enhance the entertainment facilities for social activities.
Dining are with custom table and millwork by Christian Woo.
“I wanted to have a cozy dining area, so I thought about how I  could do it in a way that wouldn’t  impede the projector,” says Max.  He mounted the device, a ViewSonic, atop the living room window.
