One of Thomas’s favorite color combinations from the ’40s was rust and pink, which she used in the guest bedroom. "I would not have thought of painting a room red (we’ve all seen that Sex and the City episode), but when I saw the sample of Spice of Life by Dunn Edwards, I was really surprised," she says. "It’s rich, and almost like a mood ring—it changes in depth and hue based on the time of day and what’s next to it."
The blue-and-white "Porcelain" room features a canopy bed and a mix of velvet, brass, and wood.
Light, ethereal tones dominate the "Sugarcane" room, which showcases elegant details including handmade tassels adorning the wardrobe's doors.
The "Suleiman" room, on the ground floor, nods to African-inspired design through touches like the traditional woven baskets peppering the expansive bookshelves.

A fresh coat of paint, a new light fixture, and updated decor make all the difference. Julia placed a West Elm Mod Upholstered bed set over a Loloi Rugs Porcia PB-07 rug from Hayneedle. The bedroom is adorned with a Motion Lines 3 print from Anthropologie and worn velvet curtains from West Elm.
To create this accent wall, Rose measured and cut each piece of wood at 30 and 60 degree angles, nailed them into the wall, caulked, and spray painted. This cost her a total of $20. The bed frame, she snagged from Ikea (Kopardal). Bedding is Nate Berkus from Target, and the throw is Opalhouse from Target.
