With Lolipop bunk beds from Resource Furniture, the space can comfortably sleep four. Heavy red curtains pull out of the walls to enclose each room for maximum privacy and sound control.
To enlarge the bathroom, they integrated the closet space into the new bathroom, and thus had to create new storage. They designed a custom walnut bed wall in the master bedroom that contains built-in wardrobes.
A variation on the system serves as a wardrobe in the sleeping loft. Additional storage can be found in the walnut platform with side tables. Although it appears less in the photo, the space between the platform and the lowest part of the ceiling is about four and a half feet, allowing René to comfortably sit up in bed. A Lutron screen lowers for privacy.
A third module, perpendicular to the main living areas, contains the master bedroom, which is furnished with a bed from Design Within Reach, a rug from Crate and Barrel, and a watercolor by Marfa artist Nick Terry. The saddle leather chair is by local furniture maker Garza Marfa.
A special media door opens to reveal the bedroom’s AV system.
The client, says architect Filipi Oliveira, “wanted everything to communicate without the need for doors in the internal environments.”
Concrete was chosen for both structural and finish material throughout much of the home, for its aesthetic, functional, and budgetary appeal. The polished concrete floors in the bedroom complement the birch bed and cabinetry. The home provides living space for the couple, two kids, one dog, and two cats.
