This is Unit 1, the most private of the four units. It's got a cool Milo Baughman sofa, a polished chrome coffee table by J. Wade Beam, a pair of Bertoia barstools, and a Thonet-inspired chair.

This was my room, Unit 2. It's the only one with the bed pushed up against the window, set on a unique cantilevered bed frame created by Trowbridge, a furniture designer. It took a little while to get used to the lack of curtains; the designers opted to keep the glazed walls open, to maximize guests' experience of Lautner's legendary approach to daylight. The surrounding walls offer plenty of privacy from prying eyes, though, and a provided sleep mask blocks out morning rays.

New interior finishes, furniture, and a guesthouse were part of the restoration/renovation of John Lautner's Chemosphere, a 1960s house that makes frequent cameos in film and television.

This is Unit 4, the only one with a redwood dividing wall between the kitchen and the living room (the rest have open concrete islands).

Tracy Beckmann and Ryan Trowbridge spent four years shopping for furnishings, fixtures, and lighting to outfit the guest rooms, sourcing steel hardware in Hong Kong, vintage lighting in Italy and France, and many mid-century pieces in their backyard, aka Palm Springs’s renowned vintage shops.

Finds included Bertoia barstools, a J. Wade Beam coffee table, and a chrome Thonet-inspired chair in Unit One and a Warren Platner coffee table and chair in Unit Four.

Each of the four units has a private patio.

To maximize guests’ experience of Lautner’s legendary approach to daylight, Beckmann and Trowbridge forewent blinds or curtains on the windows and glazed walls, offering guests sleeping masks instead.

The eat-in kitchen features poured-in-place concrete countertops and redwood wall paneling.

In Unit 3, the first room to be renovated, Trowbridge demonstrates a James Bond-esque element: a hidden television secreted behind a hinged framed painting.

On the other side of the fence—built to protect the property from flash floods—is a desert oasis with cactus-lined walkways and patios set with butterfly chairs.

All the bathrooms are tiled with Heath Ceramics seconds in rich hues. Opting for an approach of adaptive reuse over strict preservation, Beckmann and Trowbridge ripped out the dated pedestal sinks and cast-iron tubs and replaced them with modern wall-mounted sinks and spacious walk-in showers.

The idea behind Endémico is "luxury camping." Set on 40 acres of gorgeous, unspoiled terrain, there are 20 bungalows and a shared pool for guests to take a dip in. The Encuentro Guadalupe winery offers guests access to local wines as well as a peek at how they are processed through winemaking courses. Encuentro's restaurant will feature dishes that incorporate local flavors as well as a cooking school where people can learn how to prepare creative meals with the guidance of talented young chefs.

Legendary California architect John Lautner drew a complete set of plans for an additional studio, maid's quarters, changing room, and pool, that were never realized.

Beckmann stands in front of one of the four Lautner-designed units, each of which opens onto the concrete walkway and have a private entrance and private patio (set behind the redwood fence to the left).

Each unit has its own private patio with lounge chairs and miniature cactus garden.

In the kitchens, the pair replaced layers of stucco with smooth concrete and new redwood, and installed sleek metal cabinets from Ikea, which Trowbridge cut to fit the undulating, angular walls.

Balangan Vistas Resort Hotel

From the street, 67710 San Antonio Street in Desert Hot Springs, California, doesn't look all that exciting—though the streamlined wooden fence and jet-cut steel signage do give a hint of the modern style inside.

This "local prefab" home on the Isle of Skye is made mostly from materials sourced in northern Scotland. The timber-framed model, meant to evoke the simple agrarian barns of the area, can be constructed on-site in as little as a day and is designed for affordability.

In the lobby, guests are greeted at a reception desk fabricated by NYC company FERRER and illuminated by vintage pendants sourced from Belgium. The ornate tile on the floor is original—a nod to the building's past.

Although the furniture’s orientation may set your sense of direction spinning, the beds and chairs are stowed underneath the floorboards.

One of the original Propeller Island rooms, the Mirror Room is designed to make you feel as though you are inside a kaleidoscope. The room comes with an unusual tagline, “Warning: very sexy.”

With an in-room bathroom constructed out of old windows, occupants are meant to feel like they are in a writer’s enclave. The century-old skylight and walls are remnants from the pension hotel.

Although you can’t be over six feet tall to stay in this room, it is the most traditionally appealing. The bed and desk are built on top of a rustic “table,” but otherwise everything is right side up and won’t trigger a panic attack. For more information about the hotel, visit propeller-island.de.

Built out of the original rafters of the hotel, Larchenson modeled this room after a barn. Lounge on potato sacks filled with foam rubber and climb up the hidden ladder to your bed.

For a Bedknobs and Broomsticks experience: the slate floors are slanted to make it seem as though the bed is hovering above the ground.

This long, narrow room is modeled after, what else? A mineshaft. Each bed is on a terrace and the walls are tilted for that homey, claustrophobic feeling.

This minimal space conveniently doubles as a photographer’s studio with in suite backdrops and lighting boxes. Obviously, the bed is located under the floor beneath a garage gate.
