In New York about two hours north of New York City, architecture and interiors firm BarlisWedlick created an eclectic compound designed to suit a client with an idiosyncratic wish list. In the kitchen, a custom Stickbulb LED lamp hangs above a kitchen island topped by concrete from Get Real Surfaces. The cabinets and island feature a modern version of a traditional board and batten siding that are given an even more contemporary feel with the concrete countertop.

Nendo’s new product w132 for Swedish brand Wästberg is not a single item but a lamp system: A collection of parts that can be arranged in different configurations depending on what base, shade and/or pole is chosen. The shade comes in three different shapes and the lamp system is available in white, black and blue.

The food bowls are as smart as they are simple. Contour lines are embossed on the inside to indicate how much food or water the pet has consumed. The bowls not only come in three different sizes, but matching plant pots help create a more cohesive space between the products and the interior.

A minimal cube made up of two pieces is connected by a zip fastener and when the upper part is pressed down, the entire dog house is transformed into a bed.

In the ground-floor gallery, 40-foot-long library shelving is punctuated by floor-to-ceiling columns made from white acrylic panels that conceal low-cost fluorescent-tube lighting.

A central challenge of the renovation was to integrate lighting into the architecture in such a way that “even if the space had no furniture, you could turn on the lights and instantly get a cozy atmosphere,” says Bjerre-Poulsen. After Europe banned incandescents in 2009 Bjerre-Poulsen turned to halogen fixtures, which are more energy-efficient and give off a similar quality of light. (He won’t use LEDs until their ability to render color is further developed, he says.) In Østergaard and Olofsson’s kitchen, he embedded a halogen strip in the underside of the wooden shelf over the countertop to direct light onto the work surface.

Lightroom 2.0 was inspired by artists’ lofts and Decatur’s industrial past. The gallery floors are polished concrete and the exposed joists are Georgia-Pacific engineered lumber.

What if funiture could approach its context differently? Sato describes how most furniture "inevitably [tends] to become one of an “average specification” that can respond to various scenarios." Dubbed "border tables," his designs take subtle cues from the countours around them. They hug the walls and draw from each space's idiosyncratic layout.

While some border tables extend into the room, others almost defensively hug corners.

Against a white background, the effect is even more startling.

The end of each metal rod is colored white to help it seemingly disappear into the architecture.

Sato describes how "the design utilizes the element of space as a part of its structure by “parasitizing” on to the corners or edges of the walls, the edge of the floor and exhibition stands."

Each border table is constructed from square metal rods almost one-fifth an inch wide; they hold circular metal disks about 4 inches in radius.

The cavernous living room takes advantage of its height with floor-to-ceiling bookshelves.

"By walking around the gallery we went through a special design process of being inspired by elements that are normally “troublesome,” such as the corner of the room or protruding columns," says Sato. "In the process, we took turns in verifying how the furniture was balanced as it was placed within the space, as well as the proportion of the furniture itself."

Clad in copper panels that Holl had fabricated by the Kansas City, Missouri, company Zahner, the house is daylit by a host of rectangular skylights (inspired by the musical staff) punched through the roofs and the pool’s floor.
