Dwell Outdoor Takes Center Stage at Dwell on Design This year, for the first time, the ever-popular Dwell Outdoor will live right in the middle of the show floor, immediately viewable at the entrance. Beneath a stylized “rope-art” canopy created by Sausalito-based Shades of Green and outfitted with their myriad trees and plants, the new Dwell Outdoor, sponsored by Blu Homes andLumos Solar, promises to inspire. Populating the 18,000-square-foot-plus space will be full-scale structures from prefab companies like Sett Studio, who is “obsessed with energy efficiency, sustainable building materials, and designing thoughtful space.”

Bell Labs (Holmdel, New Jersey: 1957) History: As Silicon Valley titans like Apple seek to create their own corporate superstructures, it’s instructive to look back at Bell Labs, not merely a birthplace of American ingenuity but also a masterclass in corporate construction by Eero Saarinen. The man behind “the Versailles of Industry,” (the GM Tech Center), Saarinen built this ahead-if-its-time tech incubator with interconnected skyways and a mirrored ball exterior, a 472-acre campus where an impressive number of scientific discoveries took place. Status: Shuttered in 2007, the campus is owned by Somerset Development, which is trying to figure out ways to redevelop the site. Plans that have been floated over the past few years include scenarios that replace this iconic office complex with upscale homes. What You Can Do: Late last fall, Somerset committed to a $100 restoration plan, promising to develop the largest vacant office building in the country with a preservationist mindset, conserving features like the architect’s conversation pits while turning it into a more elaborate live-work space with medial offices, a library, restaurants, offices, and cafes. @ehrlicharchitects: Cantilevered kitchen - finding inspiration at Dwell on Design.

To celebrate the rich tradition of murals and street art in Los Angeles, a collective of local artists is gathering all weekend long at Dwell on Design 2013 to collaborate on a series of murals honoring this history while incorporating their respective approaches, media, and styles. As the weekend goes on, this "living mural" will evolve and change. The project is hosted by Dropbox Studios, and participating artists include Pablo Sison, Jimi Vieira, Emmeric James Konrad, KC Woolf Haxton, Colette Miller, Miriam Dafford, Maria Greschenko, Peabo De Pabon, Katie Peña, Norman Maxwell, Marcel Blanco, Ernesto Potdevin, Jr. and Jason Fitzmaurice. Here, Greschenko and Sison get started on their contribution to the mural. We'll check back in throughout the weekend to watch the art evolve!
