The United Nations Security Council Chamber, designed by the Norwegian architect Arnstein Arneberg and originally a gift of the Norwegian government, was painstakingly restored as part of a larger $2.1 billion overhaul of the U.N.'s New York campus.

The blue chairs, which are reserved for ambassadors' aides, and the red chairs—all of which are original—were outfitted with fresh Naugahyde upholstery.

The mural by Per Krohg, a Norwegian artist who studied under Matisse, was carefully restored. It shows a phoenix rising from the ashes of war.

The building's perimeter echoes the irregular trapezoidal site.

Planted with three olive trees and drought-resistant shrubs, the roof terrace provides an entertaining space, where Storey often has friends over for drinks and dinner. Storey made the deck out of clear-coated Douglas fir to save costs; it also echoes the cabinets inside, providing visual continuity. “[I wanted] to keep the variety of wood species you use to a minimum,” says Storey.

Amending Meeuwissen’s early request for an open bathroom space, the architects devised a more private chamber with an overhead skylight and walls in stone tile from Intercodam Tegels.

Working under the concept of "improvised carpentry," Chilean architect and carpenter Nicolás Aracena Müller has created a series of furniture pieces, using scraps of wood found across New York City. The collection, "Atalaya," is on view at Chamber through Sept. 23.

Müller uses the urban landscape as canvas and research material—using the principles of improvisation, the found material is not altered, but suggests and informs the design itself. Each piece is unique, comprised from what Müller finds in a given locale.

The furniture pieces are the result of a ten-day, in-gallery performance in which Müller transformed Chamber into a design studio, working under the constraints of a West Chelsea gallery space. Shown are a series of his self-fabricated hand tools used to make each piece.

Architect Christian Tonko played with a double metaphor when designing the Camera Lucida studio. The name of the cantileverd hillside space, Latin for "bright chamber," references the open window facing the valley below, as well as the skylight that bathes the workspace in natural light.
