The Sercy Beaufort Loft

This project, designed by architect David Coxson of Rittenhaus, is a guest suite and home office space above a previously-unfinished detached garage for a couple who moved from New York City to Beaufort, South Carolina. The mission was to create a space which recalled the couple's love of the NYC loft aesthetic while also tailoring the details and materials to evoke a modern equestrian tack room - horseback riding has been a long love for the wife. To maximize space and to provide ample storage, the architect approached this project as a combination of built-ins carved out to allow for both hidden and exposed shelving, highlighted by white oak trim and custom leather pulls. The sliding barn door conceals the bathroom space, while the deep room divider creates a substantial threshold to separate the office space from the guest suite. The herringbone white oak floors, reused from an old North Carolina barn, were employed to provide a graphic bunch to juxtapose with the clean lines of the millwork.
