We transformed this backyard from an underutilized space that was too hot to enjoy during the day to a shaded entertainment space for the whole family to enjoy, no matter what time of day.

To provide the clients with protection from the sun and seasonal elements, we implemented a lean-to roof system for shade and shelter. The ceiling fans allow for a much-welcomed steady breeze during the warmer months, and the fixed skylights to allow for the natural sunlight to flood back into the house during the day.

The neutral browns and tans of the patio play perfectly against the wrap-around drystack stone seating walls that double as extra seating for guests, as well as a clean “room” delineation. The area designated for the lounge furniture and fire table is perfect to curl up to that special someone on those chilly nights, but is versatile enough to become extra entertainment space when hosting a larger get-together!

Nighttime is when this backyard really comes alive! The dimmable recessed LED lighting in the roof system provides ample, yet warm light for everything from reading the newest novel to hosting a sit-down dinner with friends and family.

LED under-cap lighting was installed along the seating walls for an added feeling of luxury, while also providing the space with textural interest.

I am the Founder of MasterPLAN Landscape Design, a forward-thinking Outdoor Living Design-Build Firm located in eastern Pennsylvania. As Lead Designer, I custom-tailor each design to serve my clients and their families best, marrying beauty and function within each space. While each project is unique, I do believe that each space should share cohesiveness, simple and clean solutions along with spacial efficiency and the ideology that less is actually more. I believe that subscribing to a curvilinear design style, blending the hard structural lines of the home with the randomness of nature, creates outdoor living spaces that are exclusive yet timeless.
