After the Tubbs Fire of 2017 tore through Northern California, destroying more than five thousand structures, one Santa Rosa family chose to rebuild, this time with resilience, simplicity, and a deep connection to nature at the heart of every decision. The result is a 2,785-square-foot, three-bedroom retreat that pairs modern design with fire-resistant innovation by RSG 3-D.
Shaped by a love of the outdoors and a desire for calm after loss, the home was envisioned for both beauty and longevity. Its single-level layout was designed to evolve gracefully over time, reflecting an appreciation for art, balance, and a thoughtful way of living. The family’s art collection informed the home’s palette and textures, weaving together art, architecture, and landscape into a cohesive whole.
Built with RSG 3-D, a structural concrete insulated building system, the house is designed to withstand extreme conditions. It is resistant to wildfires, earthquakes, hurricanes, and floods, and the RSG 3-D panels act as a natural heat sink, keeping interiors temperate year-round with minimal energy use. Knowing the home was built RSG 3-D and can withstand disaster has brought the family a lasting sense of peace, an emotional resilience that mirrors the structural strength of the house itself.
The home’s three connected spaces, the butterfly-roof garage and workshop, the flat-roof connector with secondary rooms, and the larger living area that holds the great room and primary suite, flow naturally into one another. Broad southern views blur the line between indoors and out, while two distinct outdoor zones, a sheltered entry courtyard and a sunny patio off the great room, extend the living space into the landscape.
Perched on a one-acre hillside surrounded by native vegetation, the home feels both protected and open. It’s a thoughtful response to its environment and a reflection of a lifestyle that is modern yet modest, enduring yet effortless. The use of RSG 3-D underscores how strength and design can coexist, offering safety without compromising warmth or character. As communities across California face longer wildfire seasons and the realities of rebuilding, this home and RSG 3-D stand as an example of what’s possible when innovation and intention come together. It suggests a path forward for those looking to create homes that are not only sustainable but strong enough to endure whatever comes next.
