In the basement, an old and dated bedroom received new lighting, a few coats of paint, and a little glam in the door knob, giving the space a fresh and modern aesthetic.

The basement living room received very little daylight, and we went with it, enhancing the cozy, warm space to snuggle up and watch television.

Previously housing a toilet, shower and laundry area, Waldron Designs removed the shower and opened up the dark laundry room, raising the ceiling and painting existing wood cabinetry for a modernized touch on a budget.

The dark utility room had copper pipes and crumbling cabinetry from years of moisture and pests. New stairs and flooring were installed, and the deep green walls celebrated the exposed pipes. A touch of glamour with a pair of matching chandeliers made this storage room into a great wine room.

The light fixture was relocated from a bar that crossed over the stairs, which was removed. This transition went from a dark and eerie descent into the basement to a light and cheerful one

Beams guide the eye to the wall of windows with a magnificent view of the water. The wood-paneled ceiling and walls were painted to give emphasis to the beams and enhance the directional view.

In the master suite, a touch of the basement's deep green is represented again, carried from behind the vanity, into the shower wetroom which houses the toilet and showering area.

The kitchen's low ceiling gave us two options - go dark or bright and light. We opted for a light and airy space to connect with the adjacent spaces. Subtle pattern changes in the backsplash introduce change without creating too much activity in a small space. Inset cabinetry celebrates the use of knobs and pulls in brass to match the brass faucet.

From Rachel Waldron

This home rests above the water in the Manzanita neighborhood on Vashon Island. This home is all about drama with high contrast, from the modern and traditional finishes to the contrasting colors, textures, and fun retro twists.

When first entering this home, it was apparent that it had been neglected for quite some time. Anything that might be described as "functional" in the home was not functioning. Notes were posted all over the house from tricks to getting the lights to come on, to warnings not to touch the blinds, and that the toilets don't work.

With minor floor plan changes, the primary focus was on aesthetics and functionality. We were inspired by the beautiful water views and Pacific Northwest wooded surroundings as we stripped the home down to its bones and breathed in new life.
