This project involved the renovation of an existing residence that is located on the edge of Lake Owassa in northwest New Jersey. The owners are a married couple with adult children. They wished to create a home to use as a retreat as well as a place to entertain family and friends.
A majority of the existing structure as well as the entire existing foundation had to be maintained because current zoning regulations would not permit it to be built today as well restrictions posed by a modest budget.
These restrictive conditions drove the design decisions. The existing roof structure was left in place for 2/3 of the structure and a new roof structure which opened the living spaces up towards the lake view was created. As the space was limited kitchen, dining, and living room spaces open into each other to make the spaces seem as large as possible. The new roof form buttressed the existing and its walls wrapped along side and extended out from the building envelope to visually extend the structure.
The addition of a partially open screened enclosure at the entry side of the residence allowed for concealment of the mechanical equipment along with storage of lake equipment. The existing shed was reskinned along with the existing gate to match the slats on the new enclosure and provide a cohesive entry sequence.
Two bedrooms were created along with a den, dining room, living room, bathroom and kitchen. Light color natural materials were chosen. to enhance the setting and a wooden deck outside of the building views allowed for outdoor dining.
