The Glass Cabin is an off-grid family retreat, designed and built by the architect. Reclaimed glass and a reclaimed prairie on land of a sesquicentennial farm entrusted to the grandchildren was the genesis of the design, located in Northeast Iowa. Nestled in a clearing of the woods near the Wapsipinicon River, the structure is raised on columns above the flood plain providing great views of the native Midwestern prairie. Designed for occasional use, the extension of the front columns creates a man-made edge to the clearing and allows sliding barn doors to close up when not in use. Western Red Cedar is used extensively for the exposed structure, siding and decking. Powered by solar panels and lithium batteries.
