“The Bentley Longhouse “ was thoughtfully designed to shift social values away from appearance and towards practicality and functionality. The 3118 square foot home is characterized by clean, elegant lines; little ornamentation; and a construction layout generated primarily by function. Creating an International Style with unique expressions known as West Coast Modernism. Using a balanced structural layout, designers capitalized on regional building materials such as fir, and cedar. Between the large trim corners, posts, beams generous and strategically placed windows and doors frame magnificent views. The large panes of glass blurred the distinction between the exterior and interior while enhancing the veiled forest light. Mid-Century architectural influences are evidenced in the open floor plan where living spaces flowing freely from one room to another, “We wake up on the east side of the house with beautiful morning sun in the bedroom suite, and the sun follows us all day through the sunning deck, the service areas, until the evening, when we end up in the western area of the house, where the outdoor living room, fire-pit are located” says Kara Plumb, designer, builder and current homeowner. Each room in the house functions as a complete, intimate environment while the general layout dictates a flow from room to room and from inside to out, creating spaciousness and movement. Simple, 8’ doors, neutral colors of white, brown, and ebony allow for the texture of the building materials to be expressed. Concrete, wood, green areas and floor- to- ceiling 3’ x 6’ windows are repeated both indoors and out enabling an effortless dialogue with the surrounding forest and horse pasture. A dramatic free standing staircase is emphasized by the light from windows used on the adjoining outdoor rooms. The main level of the house is poured slab concrete and leads directly to the outdoor areas, Designed to allow for indoor-outdoor traffic without cross-room confusion. A growing trend in designs for homes is to pretty much bring the car into the lifestyle and turn it into not just transportation, but also a statement of ones style. The Bentley Longhouse features a collectors display garage, in addition to a flanking 3 car garage for daily parking and storage needs.
