Hancock is a small 775 square foot, 1 bedroom, 1 1/2 bath house sited on a 1540 square foot lot in Athens, about 1 mile from downtown.

The lot measures 28 feet wide and 55 feet deep and has frontage on two streets, one in the front and one in the rear. The guiding notion for the project was to demonstrate the viability of building small, dense, and energy efficient single family houses that can offer the functionality of a larger home.

With much of the lot used for the building and a single parking space, the roof is fully realized as usable outdoor space, half as a kitchen garden and half as a patio.

A canopy over the rooftop patio supports 9 photovoltaic panels, which simultaneously provide shade for the sitting area and generate enough electricity to make the house net zero. The exterior is intended to be nearly zero maintenance. The cladding is a rain screen system with weathering steel sheets on the lower sections and bays and charred locally cut white oak planks for the upper sections. There is an installed dry well to collect storm run-off from the site and a cob wood fired oven.
