Designing the Modern World Award

Choosing the finalists and, eventually, the winners wasn't the only difficult task at the Modern World Awards. Designing the face of the award was a feat in and of itself. We chatted with Creative Director Kyle Blue to get the low down on the award's design. “With the logo, we wanted to do something that was iconic and playful,” he says.

Design Truck pairs the city's coolest furniture designers with L.A.'s hottest food trucks.

Design Truck

It's an undisputed truth that some of L.A.'s best meals are served on the street. So why shouldn't L.A.'s finest food trucks have outdoor seating that equals their culinary excellence? Design Truck, a concept by Los Angeles designers Brendan Ravenhill and Chris Adamick, hopes to remedy this curious quandary of curbside dining by providing a mobile furniture gallery which can comfortably seat the noshing masses. The duo will be launching the first outing of Design Truck this weekend and Ravenhill will be talking more about the creation at dwellondesign.com.

Mohawk Portrait

Mohawk General Store Picks

As the first of the Dwell edit crew down in Los Angeles for Dwell on Design, I've had a chance to cruise around a bit soaking up all the good Angeleno design vibes. Little wonder that my peregrinations have taken me to Sunset Junction to Mohawk General Store, a winning depot for chic clothes, mid-century design, and all the lifestyle accoutrements needed to keep you significantly cooler than your stupid older brother who won't stop talking about his last trip to Austin. The shop was also the Design Finder in our April 2011 issue. Owners Kevin Carney (who will be talking at Dwell on Design on Sunday about the business of indie design) and Bo Carney showed me what they're most excited about in the shop right now.
