Cricket Trailer Garrett Finney video

Video: Garrett Finney & Cricket Trailer

After four years at NASA designing rest-eat-sleep spaces for astronauts aboard the International Space Station, architect Garrett Finney left the agency to pursue earth-based enterprises. He combined his small-space expertise and backpacking background to launch Cricket Trailer, a company that makes small, self-contained pop-up campers of the same name. We headed down to Texas earlier this year to test out the trailer and to photograph it for our October 2011 issue, on newsstands September 6. Rams: Less and More

Making its only American stop in San Francisco, the wonderful show Less and More: The Design Ethos of Dieter Rams opened this week at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. The show, which originated at the Suntory Museum in Osaka, Japan, is on through February 20th, 2012. Here's a sampling of what you'll see at the show and (as if you needed it) another reminder of why Rams' work for Braun and Vitsoe remains the pinnacle of European industrial design.

iQ Test

A leisurely test drive of the 2012 Scion iQ—the moniker being the brand’s clear shot at the Smart Car—proved its absolute necessity in the new lineup of fuel-efficient automobiles. With a combined mpg of 37, which, though possessing a conventional engine beats many of the 2012 hybrids, the iQ felt light and zippy but solid, with lots of headroom for my tall frame. (Other test drivers who stood well over six feet had no trouble settling in.)
