The water-resistant ipe wood deck wraps around two existing trees.
Taking cues from this home's Japanese-influenced slatted screen, Hufft Projects applied a ring of ipe wood around the perimeter of this outdoor fire pit.
A cement slab and wood deck offer space for meals and stargazing. Sam built the furniture himself.
Finished with a ceiling and dining table set, the second-floor patio is an optimal entertaining space.
The minimalist exterior is defined by the flat roof, overhanging eaves, a and ribbon-like band of glass windows.
The 1908 greenhouse from the Lyndsay Mansion has been repurposed into a dining pavilion. During the restoration, it was revealed that Soriano had perfectly arranged the home to line up with the original greenhouse.
On the third floor guests enjoy access to a covered swimming pool.
The rear of the house continues the same mix of materials as the front facade and includes a long, narrow pool.
"The brief was to efficiently and cost effectively transform a light-starved weatherboard into an open and modern home with a good connection to the rear garden and a relaxed yet refined feel," says the firm. The owner charred and oiled the shiplapped cypress siding himself.
"After photographing the house, we all sat down around the servery over a glass (or two) of wine and shared travel experiences, building industry war stories, and discussed the renovation," says the firm. "It was very gratifying to hear and see that the space really fit the clients well. The space was comfortable, laid-back, and yet worldly, just like the clients themselves."

Teak furniture, sourced from Teak Warehouse, adds a fitting lightness to the patio.
Planted with silver birch trees, a light-filled courtyard creates a visual and physical separation between the old building and new addition.
A 3,000-liter rainwater harvesting tank is located beneath the rear deck, which is made from spotted gum with an oiled finish.
The steel-and-glulam support system forms the covered corridor of the loggia.
The long standing-seam zinc roof extends over the pool to provide shade to the outdoor lounge.
Back into the forest, the Pool House is oriented for panoramic views of the valley floor.

"The importance of this outdoor connection was a very high priority for the clients," O'Brien explains. "They wanted the boys to be free, but wanted to keep an eye on them without them feeling like they’re being monitored."
Tall indigenous wetland grasses grow fecund, right up to the border of the saltwater swimming pool.
In the snug rear lounge, the banquettes are fitted with upholstery made by local artisans.
The intricate metal curtain doubles as a work of art.

The linear swimming pool hovers above the hillside, disappearing into the tropical foliage.
The three attached structures house an office, guest suite, and game room, used by the family to watch football games.
When Abbie and Bill Burton hired Marmol Radziner to design their prefab weekend home, their two requests were “simple-simple, replaceable materials,” says Abbie—such as concrete floors (poured offsite in Marmol Radziner's factory) and metal panel siding—and “the ability to be indoors or outdoors with ease.” Deep overhangs provide shade and protection from rain, so the Burtons can leave their doors open year-round and hang out on their 70-foot-long deck even in inclement weather. They visit the house once a month, usually for a week at a time, with Vinnie and Stella, their rescue Bernese Mountain dogs. Their two adult children occasionally join them. The couple hopes to one day retire here.
Because the site is sloped, the lower level of the home acts as a terrace for the upper level.
The 1,000-square-foot pavilion was completed in 2009 as a volunteer structure and tool shed--though today its used far more by the public than initially anticipated. "The garden was wiped out after the storm," McKay recalls. "There was nothing, zero. Volunteers came in and replanted everything." Photo by Frank Doering.
