Somerville Library Design Lectures

A night out at the local library, especially for a Friends of the Library talk, never sounded so good as when James Fox took over in Somerville, Massachusetts. Fox, now head of Friends of the Somerville Public Library has initiated a kind of designer-maker lecture series called "Talk Design" that's attracting, as he puts it, "a non-traditional audience" to come, hang out, and connect with designers, graphic designers, illustrators, and the rest of Somerville's artsy crowd. What's more, each lecture has a local food sponsor, giving the whole affair something of a party feel. We talked to Fox about getting the design crowd into the public library, and what's next for his Talk Design series.

Inky Inspiration

Italian bathroom design brand Neutra released its new line, Inkstone, this October. Inspired by Chinese calligraphy, this sleek, minimal collection was designed by award-winning architect Steve Leung. According to Neutra owner, Benedetta Arnaboldi, the collaboration with Leung evolved from Arnaboldi’s desire to strengthen Neutra’s presence in Asia (Leung is based out of Hong Kong). When Arnaboldi met Leung, he felt that they “established an effective design connection” from the start.

Dutch Design Week 2012, Pt. 3

During Dutch Design Week in Eindhoven—The Netherlands' creative nexus—we had the chance to see firsthand what conceptual thinkers, designers, and artists are working on. Demonstrated by workshops, lectures, and provocative artistic statements, a collection of thoughts and ideas relating to transportation, food, and the environment embraces new technological sciences impacted by the changing social conscience. As always, the breadth and depth of the work was impressive. We've collected some highlights for you to enjoy.

BIO23 Razstava 003

Materials and Innovation at BIO 23 Ljubljana

The BIO biennial in Ljubljana has been highlighting contemporary trends in international design for close to fifty years now, but not everyone on the global circuit might be aware of the diverse talent that has been showcased since the first exhibition in 1964. Slovenia's Museum of Architecture and Design (MAO) is the biennial's host, and with over 437 submissions from 38 countries for 2012, the jurors and curators for BIO 23 had the challenging task of selecting the best examples of innovative design influenced by modern technology, multi-disciplinary methods, and the exploration of natural systems. Margo Konings and Margriet Vollenberg of Organisation in Design were the joint curators for this year's exhibition theme, Design Relations, which was aimed at comprehensive ideas related to technology, digitalization, globalization, and product design. Folded into these categories were timely topics such as health, machines, and processes; back to craft, counter reaction, data processing, graphics; and proposals linked to industry left-overs, social/local phenomena, the urban environment, and smart solutions. We have highlighted several of the award winners in our gallery slideshow, with specifics about some of the more unusual materials, methods, and conceptual strategies employed.

Dutch Design Week 2012, Pt. 2

Over 180,000 people are expected to attend Dutch Design Week in Eindhoven and the momentum is building to get a glimpse of works introduced by the Netherlands' top designers. This event distinguishes itself from other fairs around the world by its unique setup and diverse allocation of venues; it focuses on intimate offsite locations in an effort to minimize the crowds that large single exhibition halls tend to draw. With mild weather on our side and autumn colors in the trees, the walkabout between the studios and galleries becomes quite the experience and the manifestations of the designers’ craft provides an invigorating experience.
