Design House Stockholm Celebrates 20 Years

Design House Stockholm celebrates its 20th anniversary this year and we sent a few questions to founder Anders Färdig to let us in on a few snippets about what separates the Swedish company from its contemporaries. Since its founding in 1992, Design House Stockholm has worked with some of the most talented young designers from around the world—Form Us With Love, Frederick Färg, and Jonas Wagell, among others. Using a model of production borrowed from book publishing, the company asks designers to send in ideas for products rather than calling upon a certain person to create a certain object. This approach has yielded an impressive array of products ranging from tabletop items to lighting to furniture to clothing. Each piece treads the territory of being visually minimalist but still incredibly engaging and never "plain." Below, Anders shares his thoughts and his three favorite pieces from the new collection.

Scrap Wrap Bracelets

I've got a habit—a little hoard-y, but not necessarily bad—of buying craft-ish supplies with no concept of what I will do with them. A while back at the local Mission Fabric Outlet (which is a great, great place, if you're in SF and need a shop for textiles, odds and ends), I noticed a display of Ziploc baggies full of small leather scraps... for $2 each! Score. I bought one, brought it home, and stored it with the rest of my stuff. Same with this spool of aluminum wire. It just looked like something I'd want, sometime, so I made it mine and set it aside. It took some futzing around one night while my mom was in town, and we came up with the idea for this scrappy wrap bracelet. It's easy, and quick, and you can use any small strips of fabric (if leather's not your thing). Here's how!

Fly Swatter Lehman

Leather Fly Swatter

I was in Maine last week for my yearly vacation back East, and was happy to discover a new shop in Camden called Sugar Tools. All told it has something of a shabby chic vibe, though I did come across a couple nice little mod touches for the home, the most exciting of which was this totally cool leather fly swatter from the Ohio–based company Lehman's.
