A Common Boston

If you're in the Northeast this upcoming week, you might want to swing by Common Boston, Boston's fourth annual week of celebrating architecture and urban spaces. Focusing all the city's design energy at a number of "common points" on the neighborhood level, Common Boston is a little bit different from all the other Salones and ICFFs around the world. I wanted to find out why, so over two cups of tea at Toscanini's, I caught up with Justin Crane, budding architect and co-founder/co-chair of New England's biggest design festival.

Live from London: Lifestylebazaar

I was thrilled to discover that East London is chock full of design do-gooders. The second stop of my tour of the Shoreditch design district was Lifestylebazaar, a home furnishing boutique filled with all sorts of designery goodies I won't be able to fit in my suitcase. While Ella Doran's placemat auction benefits Shelter, a UK homelessness charity, Lifestylebazaar is auctioning off nine reinterpretations of Philippe Starck's Louis Ghost chair for Kartell – itself a modern reinterpretation of the ornamental Louis XV-style chair. Live From London: Tea with Ella Doran

We celebrated the start of London Design Festival with tea and itty bitty cupcakes at British textile and surface designer Ella Doran's shop in East London. Doran has invited 23 designers and illustrators to each create a series of placemats that have been available in a silent auction in the shop since the opening on Saturday. Online bidding will also be possible as of this week.

London Design Festival: Kanittha Mairaing

Goldsmiths' postgraduate design community have a show at The Boiler House, Old Truman Brewery, on Brick Lane as part of the London Design Festival. Amongst the work shown is the 'Unfortunates' collection by Kanittha Mairaing. There's a black comedy to the project, as objects employ superstitions that supposedly bring bad luck.

London Design Festival: Twee Party

There seems to be a crockery revival—Tent has a whole host of young designers showing ceramic work of one kind or another. Perhaps the most beautiful was the 'Blaue Blume' range of tableware by Undergrowth Design.
