Dwell Store Spotlight: Italian Design Classics

The Salone Internazionale del Mobile di Milano was launched in 1961 as a means to showcase Italian furniture design. Throughout the years the Milan Furniture Fair has become a global design event, now showcasing collections from international brands and designers, and creating a hub for design professionals and enthusiasts. Milan Design Week is considered to be the most important design event worldwide each year—not only including the Salone Fair, but also from the surrounding events and showroom exhibitions from established brands and up-and-comers alike. In celebration of this year’s Milan Design Week—April 8th–13th—the Dwell Store has created a collection of furniture, lighting, and accessories from celebrated Italian Design Brands.

Passivhaus Institut Announces 2014 Finalists

The Passivhaus Institut in Darmstadt, Germany, on Friday announced 20 finalists for its 2014 Passive House Awards, singling out houses, office buildings, and other structures designed and built to the institute's exacting standards. (Put simply, certified passive houses have airtight envelopes and require no artificial heating or cooling.) An international jury selected finalists in six categories—single-family houses;apartment buildings; office and special-use buildings; retrofits; and urban planning. Among them are three projects in the United States, where the Passive House concept has been slower to catch on than in Europe. The winners will be announced in Aachen, Germany, on April 25.
