The home is made up of four gabled forms: the main house—with an attached master bedroom suite in its own distinct volume (on the left)—an artist studio, and an attached three-car garage.

Behind the house is a large meadow with a white clover path. The grasses are a mixture of pasture grasses, wildflowers, and milkweed, an important host plant for monarch butterflies.

The Weiners’ first stab at a decorative green roof went awry when workers installed the fabric membrane incorrectly; the plants didn’t thrive, and soil leached down the drain, causing a backup in the yard below. But with the help of an artist friend—–and avid gardener—–they successfully brought a piece of cultivated wildness, including hardy flora like creeping thyme, honeysuckle, hops, and kiwi, to their roof.

The home is clad in Alaskan yellow cedar—a durable, low-maintenance wood that weathers over time to turn a light gray—in order to blend in with the gray bark of the oaks. The vertical siding on the one-story volume takes on the visual rhythm of the surrounding trees and grasses.

A second green roof is planted with sedum and plays host to one of the family’s favorite spots: a hammock. Bentheim suggested adding a trellis overhead to soften and balance the appearance of the facade.

The spaces are arranged around a courtyard to create visual and physical connections. Yet, these connected areas can be broken up by large sliding doors.

Agate Pass Cabin

Schatz and Eamon carefully tend to the greens planted on the ground that they took to with shovels when digging the original footings for their home.

Plantings: Evans + Lighter Landscape Architecture, contractor Sandra Tomasetti, and architecture firm studioWTA collaborated to develop a roofline without gutters above the walkway and carport. Instead, water is channeled to feed the garden. The result is a California-inspired yard with geometrically laid-out plantings rather than grass. “It’s rows of green with mulch permeating,” Maury says.

Of the facade, Maury says, “It doesn’t stick out like a sore thumb, but it’s definitely one of the cooler houses in our area.”
