MIZA Architects completely renovated the Capilano Crescent Residence. Nestled in the trees, the home is filled with light and plenty of space. The black kitchen offers a contemporary contrast to the white walls and light hardwood floors.

A cathedral-like kitchen features polished heated concrete floors and a two-story wall of skyscraper glass framing views of the water, gazebo, apple trees, and historic barn.

The kitchen/dining/living space and a bathroom occupy the second floor, where exposed ceiling trusses and built-in natural wood cabinetry warm the otherwise crisp white interior.

Settled on a picturesque hillside in Somona, California, the Connect 5 residence features stunning floor-to-ceiling windows, which allow warm natural light to flood through the home.

Use the same finishing, for example a consistent wood palette, for your kitchen cabinets, walls and ceiling, and the effect is a kitchen than blends in seamlessly with the rest of your home for a cohesive feel.

In this Palm Springs duplex, for cabinet doors, the architect owner designed aqua blue plywood sliders that park at specific positions, fitting together like puzzle pieces. Contractor Franklin Pineda custom-built these cabinets using Baltic birch plywood from Anderson Plywood.

In the kitchen, the showstopping ceiling’s herringbone pattern is echoed by the terra-cotta tiles on the floor. Architect Michael O’Sullivan, who designed the steel-and-glass kitchen cabinets, the table, and the pendant lights (made by Lava Glass), further amped up the richness of the room by specifying an onyx kitchen island. Interior designer Yvette Jay, a collaborator and classmate of O’Sullivan, kept her material palette “tight and limited. I had to restrict myself so that everything here ties in with the architecture.”
