Mike McMahon Studio’s Subaru Cocoon was the first garden at the RHS Hampton Court Palace Garden Festival to receive five major awards. After the show, it was repurposed by Horatio's Garden.

“It shows how circular materials can slot seamlessly into contemporary design,” says McMahon of the decision to use sustainable K-Briq masonry units in the Subaru Cocoon Garden.

The kitchen’s wood-framed glass doors are original to the house, and the wood used to build the island was taken from old ceiling beams. One section of the island is topped with counter-height granite.

On the left, a workspace turns into a sleeping space when the Murphy bed is engaged and the stairs can be easily hidden from sight.

The hidden tracks blend seamlessly into the design of the stairs and allow for the louvers to close.

The custom louvers

With a few short steps, the conversation pit in the library upstairs becomes space for family to sleep.

Hess filled the niche with upholstered seating, a green onyx table with a custom powder-coated base, and tiered millwork at the ceiling. The hand-knotted, silk-blend carpet pillows are from Christiane Millinger, and light fixture is a blush-colored Gae Aulenti.

The keyhole opening inspired the arched detail for the bookshelves.
