The bunk beds were made to be as wide as possible. Hollenbeck has three kids and two dogs.

The Bracy Cottage — Living Room

Boiserie panels made of zebrawood create a cozy nook in the main living area and also form a picture rail to display the client’s art collection.

Throughout, Erik and Bill repeated and “wrapped” materials, like the birch plywood near the front entrance, which extends from the bench to the coat rack.

A pair of Molded Plywood lounge chairs by Charles and Ray Eames for Herman Miller sit opposite a BoConcept coffee table and a sofa of Paul’s design. For his father’s book collection, Paul created a library around the double-height staircase.

A fluted glass-and-wood peninsula still lets natural light flow between the rooms.

The wood paneling and the ceiling in the second bedroom are also original yet have a very contemporary feel. The second bedroom also features original sliding glass doors leading to the backyard.

On the second floor, the wood-clad volume conceals two bedrooms and a bathroom.

Martins | Afonso described the project as one where “everything was conceived in detail so that each architectural element finds its way, and where each sequencing and framing both highlights what previously existed and also gives it the stamp of united togetherness.”

Windows are deeply recessed into the home's original masonry walls, which are thick and solid. Martins | Afonso Atelier de Design opted to clad the frames of the windows with wood and create sitting nooks that take advantage of this depth.

The open kitchen faces a wall of above-counter windows that let in plenty of light. The dining table maintains the material palette of wood and black.

Resting gently on slender beams and posts, the original tongue-and-groove ceiling embodies the purest expression of form and function.

The exposed concrete is thoughtfully balanced with warm wood and minimalist details.

The wall in the den also received variegated cedar planks, as in the living room. Fieldwork redesigned the built-in unit with an open and closed system, fashioned from Hemlock and gray matte lacquer. A built-in sofa creates a seamlessly integrated lounge.

Before: this partial wall separates the living room from the entry. The cork flooring had already been installed, but the wood cladding around the fireplace needed updating.

An open living space greets you at the door. The exterior wood will gain a natural silver patina over time, melding with the concrete of the interior.

The banquet table featuring an inlaid Lazy Susan—a nod to large, shared family dinners at Chinese restaurants—and a custom curio made of steel and oak were both designed by Vancouver–based industrial designer Ko Júbilo.

A Volcanic rock garden–following a principle of feng shui–is placed at the entrance of the home.
