The interiors are simple: calm, bright, built with natural materials. “I’ve had the pleasure of meeting a few residents since it’s open, and it would make you want to cry, it’s so nice the way they describe it,” says Marrack. 

Sporting a classic black-and-white palette, the light-filled kitchen offers plenty of counter-space and storage. A built-in breakfast nook overlooks the backyard garden.

A well-organized entryway leads to a living room that opens to gardens on two sides.

In the living room, a new wall of glass connects the house to its landscape, while a family-heirlume Persian rug adds softness to the new ceramic tile floor.

The deck connecting the two buildings has an outdoor rain shower and a soaking tub, both part of the property’s gray-water system.

As part of the renovation, the masonry craftsmanship was done by David Rael, and the plaster work was completed by Christian Wolstencroft of Regency Plaster.

Local woodworkers made the chairs in the living room. Claudio and Aranza lined up nine blocks of wood from nearby construction sites to create an ad hoc coffee table. The enclosed portions of the house have massive louvered sliders, also built by local carpenters.

What became apparent to me throughout my travels is that the low-slung couch moment, as popularized by Ligne Roset’s Togo, isn’t going anywhere. “It’s better for aesthetics,” a woman informed me as I considered Lunetta, a striking sofa from Studiopepe. According to my notes, which were written after three cappuccinos and little else, this sofa is a more structured answer to the Togo, and for that alone, I love it.

Fermob’s outdoor furniture offerings are like playground toys for adults, in the best possible way. The Adadesk resembles a rocking horse, but is actually a chair with an attached desk. There are three options of how one might sit on this chair: facing forward, with the desk at your front; facing backwards, with the desk as back support; or side-saddle, just for fun. When I sat backwards on the stool, with my body oriented towards what would be the business end of the rocking horse, the ergonomic design really came into play—my lower back felt supported by the desk and if I had my druthers, I’d replace every chair in my house with this one.

The couple chose polished concrete throughout the home to contrast alongside more textural timber. The concrete has thermal heating below it to stay warm in the winter.

“Describing a feeling or way of living in our home was always important, as the color and texture palette was always chosen based on our natural surroundings,” says Teegan.

The materiality of the new staircase on the main level—glass and white oak—makes the area feel open and spacious. The skinny ceramic vase in the foreground is one of the few pieces that survived the fire.

Built-in shelves balance another corner of the living area.

The slats on the window offer solar protection and privacy. “Before the slats were installed, it really felt like you were just living on the street,” says Vanbesien.
