In Orinda, California, Pearl and Larry Toy hired Blue Truck Studio to adapt the home they built in the ’70s for aging in place.

French doors, exposed timber, and an organic palette transformed the living room, bringing in tons of light and a warming atmosphere.

Large floor-to-ceiling windows and organic-toned furniture and flooring gives the bedroom a natural, texturally rich take.

The front door’s glass opening is accentuated by narrow extruded aluminum frames. The muntin bars are finished in an rich onyx shade to match the framing, and the pattern of the performance divided lites complements the rest of the custom Kolbe Ultra Series windows and doors throughout the house.

The grand foyer was created to accentuate the open living space and bring more of the outside in.

The kitchen was expanded, while the original stone features were repurposed in other parts of the home.

In the primary bath, marble tile and accents along with brass fixtures lends an elevated touch.

Now the kitchen opens to the living room and dining room in one open space.

The living room got a facelift with a new fireplace and built-in seating and storage that flows into the hearth. The marble fireplace surround is the same stone used in the kitchen, and the bench is white oak.

The "appliance garage

The floors and casework are white oak, and the counters and backsplash are marble. The sconces are a custom design by Workaday, which is available through their Portland shop Daygoods.

The designers introduced new Alaskan yellow cedar glulam beams for the updated roofline and windows by Pella. The front door is painted in Sherwin Williams "Rose Colored."

Ten-feet-high ceilings in the newly built extension accentuate the renovation's levity.

A compact bar concealed behind the bleached joinery is one of those smaller moments offering delight on reveal.

“I’ve always been crazy about tile,” says Jessy, which is why she was heartbroken when she found the 1961 powder blue tile in the master bathroom had been scribbled on with permanent marker. “Turn right for cold water. Turn left for hot,” the wall read. The new tile is by Ann Sacks. “We tried to source products that looked appropriate for the period,” Jessy explains.
