The traditional wood-fired oven acts as both a stove and a way to warm the home. “It’s really important because it has this presence of the history of the rural world. But we designed it and it’s made with rammed earth, which is a new thing [compared to] other traditional ovens,” says Tavares.

The gaps underneath the ceiling have become home to spiders and ants have taken up residence in parts of the house—all facts that Lia is embracing, for better or worse, as part of life in nature.

A skylit hallway separates the living areas from the bedrooms. At the end is a breakfast terrace topped with a glass roof.

The table and stools are by the couple’s friend and collaborator Marissa Naval of Casa Naval. In the dining room, rustic mismatched pieces create a warm setting. “Most of the furniture is a mix of items from old collections found at flea markets, inherited from family, or repurposed from past projects,” says Luis.

The recently restored Mosby House features old-growth maple flooring—saved from a nearby school’s demolition—and original Neutra cabinetry, which was added back to the kitchen.
