The walnut millwork in the Dacor concept kitchen is a stand-out example of how natural materials can be used to create a warm and welcoming kitchen.

The Refrigerator and Freezer Columns seamlessly integrate into the walnut joinery, while the Beverage Refrigerator and Wine Cellar feature elegant glass fronts that showcase their contents as part of the design. “Dacor’s Panel Ready products make matching a palette effortless,” says Nicolosi. “Whether you are working with wood veneers, laminates, or glass, Dacor will fit your needs.”

The plinth for the ladder to the sleeping loft in the primary bedroom building doubles as a bench for putting on shoes. Storage along the wall becomes a desk and a window seat nestles into an intimate corner.

Architecture and landscape firm LMNL breathed new life into a dilapidated 1840 Dutch dwelling by preserving the home’s historic facade while completely gutting the interior. The kitchen became the nucleus of the home, with ample storage and a marble-clad island, connected fluidly to a newly landscaped garden.

The kitchen is compact and utilitarian yet warm and welcoming with key features such as the sky-toned backsplash and blonde plywood paneling for the cabinetry, kitchen island and shelving units.

A custom commissioned orange island out of steel is the centerpiece of the Sorth cabin.

“We pulled apart one volume and staggered it along the buildable area of the property,” says architect Matthew Ahlberg of Portland firm Barrett Made. The home is clad in unfinished cedar, meant to weather over time.

The island bar in the kitchen features white Arcilla Field tiles by Ann Sacks that match the turquoise tiles used in the guest bathroom. The lights above the bench are classic VL45 Radiohus pendants, which were originally designed in the 1940s by Danish architect Vilhelm Lauritzen for Louis Poulsen for the construction of the Radiohuset building in Copenhagen.

The kitchen features radiant-heated bluestone floors and a quartzite backsplash.

“When I think about how the homeowners solved the challenge of cloudy weather, I’m reminded of how crucial light, air, and views are, and I know the homeowners kept this top of mind. Michigan is one of the cloudiest states in the country, so making the most of available sunlight is key.”

Dobrinski designed and crafted an industrial-style light fixture to suspend above the quartzite island. The fixture is 12 feet long and features wood doweling, copper fittings, and loosely strung pendants. The leather-upholstered bar chairs that pull up to the island are from West Elm.
