The couple fell in love with a space-saving queen-size Murphy bed that Minarc sourced for them. Made by the Italian brand Clei, it was purchased for $15K from Resource Furniture in West Hollywood.

Kille's oldest son currently lives in the space, but moves back to the main house when family come to visit.

While Kille didn't get a separate bedroom, MR Studio was able to fit in a California king-sized bed into the space, complete with its own integrated curtains for privacy.

The desk folds up and the installation swivels to pull down the bed.

The overhanging roof creates a small covered balcony for the house.

The flooring material, fir car decking, with the V-notch side down to create a downstairs ceiling with texture, is twice as thick as standard hardwood flooring. The flat side faces up as the flooring for the second story, and brass flooring nails were left exposed, further contributing to an aged, hand-built look.

The studio is kept simple to give creativity room to flow. "We often come up here after dinner and play a game in the corner nook," Emily says. Eric says that light from sunrises makes the space feel magical in the morning.

A splash of dark green paint in the sleeping nook introduces an old world drama to the space. The paint color is Billiard Green from Sherwin Williams. The crochet pendant is from World Market, and the brass bull was an eBay find. The couple's dog Waylon lounges in the pull-out dog bed drawer.

A low wooden bench running along both sides of the extension is both functional and attractive.

In the house’s private wing, a built-in desk provides a work space with a view, and sliding doors can divide the sleeping quarters.

Visual artist Amélia Marta enlisted Portuguese architecture firm Madeiguincho to design a space where she could stargaze, make art, or just sit and think. To create the multipurpose but still economical interior, the designers got inventive with windows and wood.

The peek-a-boo window in the attic space helps to connect the family across floors.

The entrance of diffused sunlight and wood flooring creates a warmed balance.

For now, one-year-old Awa is small enough to sleep in the hammock that hangs from the ceiling.
