Charlie Miner and John Neamonitis, the co-founders of WorkOf, discuss the trends they've noticed in the maker community.

What everyday item would you like to see made domestically?

We would love to see more of the technology we use in our daily lives—everything from laptops to smartphones—produced here, but the manufacturing side of our economy has historically focused on industrial products. Duo Server by Bower, $180.

What do you wish was easier to make and source in the USA?

We’d like to see more upholstered pieces like sofas and loungers coming from the independent design community. Sofas are inherently larger ticket items and harder to store, so not a lot of smaller designers are producing them, particularly in the big cities like New York and San Francisco where studio space is expensive. Floor Lamp by Volk, $975.

What American-made products are you tired of seeing?

We’re starting to see a move away from reclaimed tables. That industrial aesthetic is starting to fade in favor or more refined coppers, brasses, and other metals. Set of Two Spring Tumblers by Studio Joo, $85.

What’s your best seller?

We sell a lot of lighting, particularly from Allied Maker. The Dome pendants ($650) are popular.
