The texture of the reclaimed timber door contrasts with the industrial corrugated steel facade. “We rebuilt the exterior with dark grey corrugated steel and a tall front door to distinguish it a bit on the street from its neighbors,” says architect Aniket Shahane.

Residents Fei Zhong and Nick Gaffney fell in love with the location and the bones of the house. “We lived in the East Village for almost a decade after meeting in law school and realized that we needed more space once our first child arrived,” recalls Fei. “We sought out homes in Park Slope and fell in love with South Slope, which is still changing while remaining diverse and filled with young families.”

Lime plaster walls lend rich texture in all of the rooms of the home, including the casual dining space which is outfitted with built-in shelving.

The interlocking ceramic tiles on the roof provide micro-ventilation, which improves the hygrothermal properties of the tiles and helps disperse summer heat. The entire roof is finished with brick, from the stepped eaves to the gutter overflow spillways.
