A pink, sculptural staircase appears to float in the middle of the common area, demarcating the boundary between the living and dining areas, and connecting the two levels.

Inside, a suspended staircase rises up past the couple’s bookcase over a well-lit seating nook. Aalto stools by Artek join Eames molded plywood dining chairs by Herman Miller to give an especially modern touch to the kitchen.

Inside, the eye goes immediately to a floating staircase along one wall. Hand painted by local artist Tess Thomas, its wood treads add a pop of color within the voluminous great room.

The high ceilings in the original gymnasium enabled the architects to introduce a mezzanine floor into the volume to foster privacy for the bedrooms. The finished home is 2,475 square feet.

The handrail continues onto the mezzanine as a slanted balustrade that follows the upper level’s triangulated plan. "It looks like a complicated system, but on closer look, most of the surfaces are planar," says Amanda. "We did this to ensure that the project could be constructed as accurately as possible."

On the first storey, a seat is extruded into a platform that allows for ad-hoc, multipurpose use.
