A double-height glass wall looks out onto the home’s courtyard entrance.

The stairs that connect the main level to the mezzanine appear to float weightlessly without any visible support.

The home’s two levels used to be connected only by an external staircase. The architects reorganized the floor plan to insert a new indoor stair, which is bordered by a screen of steel cables grounded in stones the couple collected on their beach. The columnar lantern is by Stefan Gulassa, a local artist who made many of the home’s light fixtures.

Their carpenter Proedl built a lot of the storage and furniture in the apartment, including these concealed cubbies beneath the stairs—with room for a dry bar, of course.

Ménage balanced the historic ornament with modern interventions, like the rebuilt wood staircase and glass handrail.

The same limestone is used for the floating stair treads, combined with painted steel balusters and a handrail of leather and steel.

The courtyard is bordered by a glass-enclosed staircase, which leads up to the master suite and rooftop terrace, as well as a hallway that links to the second floor in the stables building. The trio of floating tables are the Baxter Matera Table in different sizes.

A cylindrical glass staircase with Western red cedar and painted steel mullions dominates the front of the house. The stair treads, along with the floor, are made of recycled spotted gum.

Another lounge area is located in the sound-proof basement, providing a spot to enjoy the custom stereo system. "The rug truly captures the ’80s love of geometric shapes," says Lorenz.

The stairs—crafted from white oak, glass, and blackened fabricated steel—were a central element to the design of the interiors.

Often skylights are located haphazardly without performing a solar analysis, Manes says. “We recommend designers perform a solar study to help layout the proper locations for their skylights.”
