The home’s entrance features a grand vaulted foyer space with a cantilevered staircase up to the second floor. “We worked with Marvin Ultimate series to create the stair tower so we could stack windows together, and really create this kind of feeling of a wall of glass,” says DeBaker.

The first floor is where the family spends most of the day. “The girls will be playing, and we’ll be working on projects and cooking,” Honora says. “It just all happens right here.”

Details like a plywood staircase and pine flooring lend the home extra warmth. A Splügen Bräu Flos pendant adds a touch of shine to the dining room.

The renovation updated a pair of staircases—one to the basement, one to the upper level—from their steep, unsafe angle to one that is now up to code. In the dining room, the pendant by Hans-Agne Jakobsson is from Karoline’s family cabin in Germany.

Open-Tread Accent Stair

The new stairway was given an enlarged window, while privacy is maintained with the help of a Japanese maple outside.

Lisa added a trio of windows up the staircase so that sunlight would stream in behind the slat wall.

The stair’s dramatic, double-height ceiling and Marvin Elevate Direct Glaze windows are accentuated with shiplap cladding and a textural basket weave light fixture. “The stairwell is a showstopper, with two stories of windows, cathedral ceilings, modern stair railing, and organic-style chandelier,” says Oursler.

After: The soaring new living and dining space benefits from an abundance of natural light from every side, and they spent a lot of time trying to find the best lighting for the kitchen. The final choice: long, narrow copper pendants from Denmark suspended by ultra thin wires to not disrupt the visual flow of the room.

The main living area is on the second floor in an open double-height space where the ceiling peaks at 15 feet under an angled roof. It contains an airy kitchen/dining area and a living room. A hallway leads to the primary bedroom, and a loft contains a bedroom for their kids. The ground floor has an apartment they rent to local teachers.
