The couple called in specialists TKTK to remove the steel girders that had been added to the original stone staircase sometime in the last hundred years. A small window frames a glimpse of a Cherner armchair.

The couple also reconstructed portions of the main staircase, replacing wooden railings with iron. A semicircular landing at the base was also rebuilt as a simpler square design.

The spiral staircase has been revamped with new wood stair treads that tie in with the wood floors.

“We took away a very thick, heavy staircase that led to the loft, and designed one that had a much lighter look,” Wåhlin says. “The new one, made of steel, looks simple and indeed light—but is in fact super heavy and was a real challenge to construct.”
