The faceted corrugated metal ceiling opens up over the staircase, soaring to a height of 32 feet above the ground floor. Like much of the metalwork, the steel staircase and railing were fabricated by Tutto Ferro.

An L-shaped island wrapped in Pietra Cardosa stone has a prep sink, more storage, and a seating counter, from which you can gaze into the backyard.

The staircase in the mudroom is made of raw steel kickplates and treads created from locally harvested sugar maples.

The slat wall treatment is continued, with the powder-coated metal railing “creating a different language,” says Gregga. Adds Sean: The railing “has such a good feel in your hand.”

The warm wood furnishings stand out against the sculptural staircase, which references the form of the wall outside.

Inspired by a mix of influences, including Stanley Kubrick films, James Turrell light installations, and Marfa, Texas, the pair believe in applying a unique vision to each of their works. “I don’t want to create a product that gets mass-produced,” says Lindstrom. “I want to keep responding appropriately to whatever landscape we’re building in.

Nestled in the woods two hours east of Minneapolis, Off-Grid Inn, Unit 2, one of a pair of rental cabins designed by Danny Lindstrom and built with his friend and business partner, Duff Davidson, combines simplicity with unexpected, offbeat elements like a neon-yellow handrail, an oversize stairway, and changeable lighting.

Their carpenter Proedl built a lot of the storage and furniture in the apartment, including these concealed cubbies beneath the stairs—with room for a dry bar, of course.
