Sleek black steel encases the wooden stair treads that connect the home's three floors.

Expansive windows and skylights usher incredible amounts of natural light into the residence.

"The oversized skylight enables the owners to see the sky from the center of the house," Maydan says. "It was also important to ensure that the palm tree, which was planted in the center of the entry atrium, can get plenty of sunlight."

On closer inspection, the surfaces, including the floors and the kitchen were in far worse shape than they appeared in the photographs.

The original staircase had the carpet removed and the wood tread restored.

The room has dining chairs by Ton and a pendant light by Louis Poulsen over the table.

The portion of the bench that’s closer to the entryway has cubbies that were originally designed to store firewood, but now the homeowners use them to store baby toys adding yet more flexibility.

In the living room, an Artek daybed is covered in Helios dark green fabric from Johanna Gullichsen.

Still life with IKEA lampshade and ventless fireplace. The unfinished, black, welded-steel railing borders steps made of framing lumber, which emit a friendly, old-fashioned creak as Walz treads up and down.

The spatial drama on the interior comes from the staircase and tatami room upstairs. The daffodil pendant overlooking it all is from Ikea. The butterfly stool is by Sori Yanagi and was a birthday present from Konishi to Gaffney.

Here also hardy materials—the dark oak stairs—contrast with clean white walls.

A fireplace and central heating keeps the open space warm and inviting.

A large wood relief artwork by Edwin Jefferey overlooks the new catwalk bridge. Klara first saw Jeffrey’s work in Folk Art magazined before purchasing the piece from a gallery in 2023.

Opening up the stairwell with glass partitions allowed daylight to penetrate to the core of the highly vertical structure. The architects also removed partitions around the kitchen and relocated it to the home's east end where it faces the building's historic bay window.

The living area is anchored by a new stair leading to the second level, which is screened by slats of the same red oak used in the flooring. The side chair was sourced and reupholstered by Seattle-based Madsen Modern.
