After restoring and renovating the interior of their four-story brownstone in Brooklyn’s Bedford-Stuyvesant neighborhood, Jeff Madalena and Jason Gnewikow—creative entrepreneurs and self-described interiors obsessives—outfitted the historic 1910 space with a minimal black-and-white palette, down to the stair railing and original moulding and wainscoting. Sparse, modern pieces—like a two-pronged sconce they designed for the parlor-floor landing and a Cy Twombly print in the adjacent family room—provide elegant counterpoints to the architecture.

“We put a big skylight over the stairwell in order to bring light into the center of the house, and we opened up the stairwell to maximize how much light reached the first floor,” Barker says.

The front stairway features a delicate archway and wood flooring. While the goal wasn’t to match the same timber, the addition’s minimalist color palette and choice of timber help smooth the gap between the old and the new.

“Each of the bedroom spaces is split level, which creates a play space for the children on the lower level that can later be adapted for study. The master bedroom is designed with a dressing area in the upper space that opens onto an en suite,” note the architects.
