A brick chimney with two fireplaces anchors this tiny, grass-roofed sauna in Sweden.

Dan and Jessica eventually hope to add rain barrels to capture water for use in irrigating their garden.

Jessica created a mural above the covered seating area by tracing shadows cast by nearby trees.

Jessica and Dan's home sits adjacent to a cemetery (a gravestone can be seen just behond the white fence), and occupies the site of a former church.

The garage interior includes a built-in work bench and drawers, as well as peg-boards from which the couple's tools can be hung.

Jessica, seen here inside her studio, is a multidisciplinary artist with an emphasis on print-making.

Plywood paneling lines the garage's interior, including an arched doorway. To add a small artful detail, the couple saved the wood cutout from the top of the arch and mounted it above, inverted.

After expanding their farmhouse, rural Illinois Daniel Payette and Jessica Merchant called on Converge Architecture to help them design a space that’s “more than just a car-hole.”

In Keith’s eyes, the walls of louvers around the living room help marry the concrete plinth, wood kitchen block, and pool. “It was the most difficult thing formally to resolve, because you have all these pieces and have to figure out how to best connect them,” he says.

A skylight and double-height floor-to-ceiling windows ensure the interior vegetation gets enough sunlight.

On the left, stairs over the sauna lead up to an elevated lookout on the right. Beneath it is the bathhouse.

Pine and gravel sleepers follow the site’s natural slope, weaving through the existing pine trees until reaching the home’s entrance.
