The interior remodeling of a 19th floor, 3,800 sq. ft. Russian Hill apartment into a
pied-á-terre for a couple with an extensive art collection. The space is delineated by the precise placement of finely crafted millwork with steel and bronze detailing and an emphasis on creating access to the omni-present views.
The program required a conversion of the existing 3 bedroom, 2 ½ baths into a 2 bedroom, 2 bath en suite apartment with an open plan living space that would accommodate the clients collection of art and sculpture. Support spaces include a library/office and gallery space. The goal was to create interconnected spaces that took better advantage of the omni-present views, provided hanging space for art and minimized circulation spaces.
The design strategy was to locate all of the support spaces- bathrooms, closets, etc. at the center of the space, accommodating the existing infrastructure, and then inserting a series of millwork elements that would delineate distinct programmatic spaces- Entry, Gallery, Library, Kitchen, Bedrooms, etc. This approach incorporates the circulation into the programmed spaces, creating in effect gallery spaces, eliminating hallways and allowing for uninterrupted east-west views along the north and east, primary view walls.
