After a wildfire ripped through Jeff Waldman and Molly Fiffer’s 10-acre retreat in the Santa Cruz Mountains in August of 2020, the couple was determined to build a new home. They were hesitant about investing too much money, though, as they knew that California was only getting drier and more prone to fires.

Doors flank the main seating area of the living space. The owners purchased the Heywood Wakefield chairs from Strictly Hey-Wake in Hagerstown, Maryland near the wife’s childhood home. “I’d always wanted Heywood Wakefield furniture, and it fits in really well here,” she says.

Mike Secore at MHS Architectural Millwork in Marlborough, New Hampshire built the kitchen cabinetry, which boasts panels in white and natural maple. Teal-colored concrete countertops fabricated and installed by Portland-based Zen Stoneworks add color and accentuate the midcentury-modern vibe.

The kids’ bath has a whole new look that includes orange glass subway tiles by Ann Sacks, ceramic penny tile, an orange trough sink, and sconces from Barn Light Company. The custom recessed medicine chest is made from mahogany with a butternut-colored finish.
