Alloi Architects and Construction transformed a typical 1940s Los Angeles ranch home that had been modified piecemeal over the years. The firm — certified passive house designers — expanded and upgraded the home, which the owner had purchased in the 1990s.

On the hillside site, the triangular pool is on the same plane as the house.

The clients desired a modern, streamlined retreat to escape the city.

The homeowners purchased this property specifically for the views. Located in the Mad River Valley of Vermont's Green Mountains, the site boasts views of the Sugarbush ski resort.

Rather than augment the site’s natural slope, the design introduces a cable-stayed cantilever that hovers over the landscape. This space is primarily used as a patio, with a hole cut into the flooring to allow an existing tree trunk to pass through the space.

The exterior is wrapped in weathering steel that echoes the color of the soil and allows the cabin to blend into its surroundings.

A pool at the edge of the terrace gives swimmers the best views of the property.

An outdoor shower just outside the primary suite is perfect for rinsing off after long, sandy days at the beach.

"The home noses out of the forest just a little bit, like it’s peeking out of the trees,” says architect Ray Calabro.

Beyond the new addition, the undertaking also improved the existing 1980s brown brick home—reconfiguring the living, kitchen, and dining areas.
