A hallway “bridge” allows light to flow down from the skylights above. “By detaching the hallway from that wall, it allowed that light to really sink down into all the floors as much as possible,” says Jennifer, who notes that it reaches the ground level. “And keeping the railings light and the stairs as open risers are all ways of getting that light down.”

It was important to ensure that the writer’s work space connect seamlessly with the rest of the apartment. The built-in shelving echoes the library shelves downstairs, and the white oak desk, designed by e.g. Projects, is consistent with the white oak cabinetry throughout. The firm opened up the mezzanine level so it can now access natural light from the double-height living room. A curtain can be pulled across when privacy is needed. The couch is from Blu Dot and the Ashland Coffee Table is by 57st Design.

“The sellers are both architects and one was a student of Olsen's in the 1970s,” says the listing agent. “The glass vestibule that you enter through was added in the ‘70s, but was actually designed by Olsen as well.”

The screen was fabricated by the contractor O’Brien Wood & Iron. "I like this treatment because it’s so dynamic," says Jocie. "It acts as a separator, but it does have some transparency and visibility with it." The existing red oak floors in this room were stripped and bleached to more closely match the new white oak stairs and floors.
