The entry hall is open but inviting. “When you get into the property you can see thru the space, so I didn’t want it to be cluttered,” Bérubé says. The white oak built-ins for coats and shoes are simple and seamless. The Jan Kath rug warms the the poured-in-place concrete floor. The owners acquired the Nicola Hicks bear sculpture at an art fair in Hong Kong from London-based Flowers Gallery.

A hallway “bridge” allows light to flow down from the skylights above. “By detaching the hallway from that wall, it allowed that light to really sink down into all the floors as much as possible,” says Jennifer, who notes that it reaches the ground level. “And keeping the railings light and the stairs as open risers are all ways of getting that light down.”

It was important to ensure that the writer’s work space connect seamlessly with the rest of the apartment. The built-in shelving echoes the library shelves downstairs, and the white oak desk, designed by e.g. Projects, is consistent with the white oak cabinetry throughout. The top is wrapped in leather, in a nod to traditional writer’s desks.

The stairs were rebuilt with stained oak tread, a white oak hand rail, and blackened metal screening.

The firm opened up the mezzanine level so it can now access natural light from the double-height living room. A curtain can be pulled across when privacy is needed. The couch is from Blu Dot and the Ashland Coffee Table is by 57st Design.

Back in the living area, shelving hardware by Rakks create a tidy spot for the displaying the couple's collection of vinyl.

“The sellers are both architects and one was a student of Olsen's in the 1970s,” says the listing agent. “The glass vestibule that you enter through was added in the ‘70s, but was actually designed by Olsen as well.”

The screen was fabricated by the contractor O’Brien Wood & Iron. "I like this treatment because it’s so dynamic," says Jocie. "It acts as a separator, but it does have some transparency and visibility with it." The existing red oak floors in this room were stripped and bleached to more closely match the new white oak stairs and floors.

Lofty and bright, the residence retains some of the fundamental features of its industrial heritage.
