Air Lids is a minimalist kitchenware collection created in collaboration between nendo and Daikin. Daikin produces fluoroelastomer which is made from the same raw material that makes substances used in its air conditioning systems. Fluoroelastomer is a high- performance rubber which is commonly used in the automotive industry. This material has outstanding heat, oil and acid resistance and excels in preventing changes in color and shape over a long period of time. This fluoroelastoemer, which is made from the same raw materials that assist in supplying pleasant air to people, has a silkier touch than regular silicone rubber, mimicking the same “airy” quality as if directly touching something materialized from the air itself, which normally cannot be touched. In order to best express the material’s characteristics and properties, a variety of functional kitchenware lids were designed each showcasing different possibilities.

Tempo is a minimalist series of lighting archetypes built into a single system designed by Barcelona-based studio Lievore Altherr for Vibia. Tempo is the result of a challenging idea: different Lighting Archetypes built into a single system. We analyzed and defined archetypes from different cultures and regions, concentrated on three, reduced these to their most essential expression and finally brought them together into a system of fixing elements such as hanging versions and different arms. The challenge was to make it work as one single system, but maintain the identity of each archetype – finding a common balance within a family of individuals. Lightness, the interplay of opacity, translucence and transparency, and atmosphere are central themes for the Tempo collection. Three different glass shapes offer varied lighting effects – one like a classic bulb under a reflector meant to send light to the floor; one like the classic opaline globe reinterpreted with a soft shape and blurred effect that mixes general with floor oriented light; and another is a reduction of the angular opaline lamps offering a diffuse general light. All of them respond to different expressions and lighting situations, and can be used with diverse pendant and arm solutions. The structure can be interpreted in graphite black, broken white, matte gold and a soft grey-green. Together with the lamp shades the system allows endless interpretations.

Musa is a minimalist lamp designed by Stockholm-based studio Note Design Studio for Vibia. Musa is a lamp of organic qualities that attracts the eye due to its lighting function. A delicate and elegant design where a symbiotic interaction is established between the small hand blown opal glass-sphere and the dish that holds and reflects it. The distinctive composition of two circles, one of light and the other of support, marks its balanced formal expression and its functional performance as a lamp. The slightly textured concave aluminum base captures the light from the simple diffuser and amplifies it smoothly. It’s made in three color options: white, salmon and mink grey, that adds to the warm quality of the lamp.

Place & Thing is a minimalist collection of lighting objects created by Toronto-based designer MSDS Studio for Aesop. ‘Place & Thing’ is a group of lighting objects that explore rituals of personal care, scent manufacture, and domestic objects. Each item is abstracted from a thing found in the home. Closer inspection will reveal a ladle, mirror, bowl, cupboard, mortar and pestle, basin, and, in the front window, a landscape. The items are made in wood – some sandblasted to accentuate the natural grain – and a range of materials, colors, and forms taken from Aesop products. The group comprises a domestic tableau that synthesizes Aesop and MSDS Studio’s shared interest in space, material, and experience.

Bent Boxes are minimalist storage containers created by New York-based designers Visibility for Normann Copenhagen. These boxes are built simply and take inspiration from the Japanese tradition of Magewappa, bentwood housewares. Constructed from a single strip of wood wrapped around a base, their forms are easy to understand and open ended. The boxes are able to stack for storage, allowing the user to determine how they could fit into their lives; whether as trays, containers, or catch-alls.

Offline Lamp is a minimal lamp designed by Vienna-based studio Kelemens Schillinger. A typical table lamp with a black drawer integrated on its pedestal. The drawer is like a magical chest that requests a small object like a smartphone that can be put inside. Once the smartphone is locked inside the drawer, the light turns on. When you give something, you get something in return. In this case, you trade the often uncontrollable urge to check for new messages for a bit of light that invites you to read a book instead or just focus on your work. What remains is the simple solution “Out of sight, out of mind”.

Bunaco Speaker is a minimalist speaker created by Tokyo-based designer nendo. Bunaco was developed to make effective use of the abundance of beech trees that grow in Aomori prefecture in Japan. By rolling thin and narrow strips of beech wood to create coil-based shapes, objects that are water resistant with less cracks and distortions can be made. In addition to its use in various applications such as bowls, decorative goods and lighting fixtures, this technique is also tested for wireless speakers. As a result of the shape of the internal cavities, fine steps, and the sound absorbing qualities of the beech wood, it has been proven to produce a uniquely clear and soft tone. Therefore, an omni-directional speaker with a vertically standing diaphragm was designed, aiming to maximize the acoustic quality and the spatial distribution of the sound. To accentuate the beauty of Bunaco’s woodwork, the speaker is supported with a transparent acrylic cylinder. The clear base makes it possible to see the unfinished edge that is left curling from the bottom, enabling users to intuitively understand the speaker’s structure as well as the craftsmanship invested in its production.

L3 is a minimalist interactive light object created by Berlin-based studio rlon. The studio creates objects and installations characterized by minimal aesthetics, playful interactions and poetic motions. Their works arise out of a particular interest in meta physics, spatial cognition and experiments with materials and processes. A discourse, that can be seen in their new light object L3. The lamp provides a very playful interaction, seducing us to touch and sense it on an almost intimate level. It is controlled just by placing a metal sphere in different magnetic fields on its surface. Representing the energy source of the system, the smooth and reflecting sphere with it’s confident weight, invites us to play with it and feel the gravity towards the center of the light ring. Both illuminant and interface thereby become protagonists of a geometric staging. L3 tells a story of the journey to the center. Of oneness and separation. Of symmetry and tension.

Flik Flak is a minimal lamp created by Stockholm-based designers Snøhetta. Snøhetta has designed its very first lamp collection, Flik Flak, in close collaboration with the Swedish lighting company, ateljé Lyktan. Initially developed as prototypes for The 7th room at Treehotel in Harad’s in Northern Sweden, the collection comprises a wall-mounted lamp, a table lamp and a floor lamp. The collection plays on distinctive contrasts between light and dark, inside and outside. While the wooden exterior surface is treated with black coloring, reflecting the idea of darkness, the wooden inside of the lamp has kept its natural, light color, diffusing the warm light by dimmable LED strips.

Rivington Glassware is a minimal glassware collection designed by London-based designer Blond. When designing the collection our aim was to utilize blow-molding as a production technique and create a durable collection of glassware with a delicate aesthetic. This has been achieved by using Borosilicate, a type of glass which has superior thermal resistance and strength. Whilst testing other products, particularly other carafes – we noticed that the volume required often lead to an uncomfortable grip. In response to this, we looked at ways to make the grip of the carafe more comfortable and secure. The results of testing and prototyping lead to a contemporary interpretation of the classic faceted shape. Each piece within the collection exhibits subtle faceted sides which fade-out towards the top edge of the product. The facets are intended to be almost invisible upon first glance; only becoming apparent with the beautiful light reflections and shadows that they create; encouraging their use as table centre pieces.
