Architect: Heliotrope Architects, Location: Orcas Island, Washington

From the architect: “The owners, both dedicated art collectors and creators, desired a flexible space that could be easily reconfigured over time. The home is situated at the top of a steep hill, with southwest views and a forest on the opposite side. Outside, a carport doubles as a dining terrace in inclement weather and a lower terrace with a fire pit serves as the primary focus for summer leisure.”

2. Homage to Oscar

Architect: George Reeves / Luigi Rosselli Architects, Location: Bellevue Hill, Australia

From the architect: “Overall our clients felt that the major elements of the layout of their home worked well, [but] the connections between the indoor and outdoor spaces were poor and the house was generally beginning to look its age...as such, improving those connections and restoring and enhancing the home in line with the original architect’s intent was the main focus of this renovation.”

3. 68 Jonkershoek

Architect: Gallagher Lourens Architects, Location: Stellenbosch, South Africa

From the architect: “The guiding idea of connecting the north-facing front garden with the back garden is expressed through the central double volume, which accommodates the lounge, distributes light through the body of the house, and connects the house spatially and with its context through the tall glazing on both sides, which visually bring the Tipuana and the mountains into the house. A strong emphasis is placed on creating an uninterrupted flow of nature through the house.”

4. The Ibiza Campo Loft

Architect: the Nieuw, Location: Ibiza, Spain

From the architect: “On a remote mountain field in the rugged north of Ibiza lies this beautiful island home. What formerly served as a workshop and storage has been turned into a contemporary dream house. The owner of Ibiza Interiors and the Nieuw developed this 100-year-old warehouse into a guesthouse and showcase project.”

5. Chechaquo Cabin

Architect: Prentiss + Balance + Wickline Architects, Location: Mazama, Washington

From the architect: “The Chechaquo Cabin began with a simple request: a quiet retreat for two that could double as a place for entertaining friends and family. The result is an open-concept floor plan with an easy flow, laid out as a long, narrow rectangular house half-buried in the steep slope and nestled between three large fir trees. A generously overhanging roof is supported by an exposed steel and glulam structure, forming a loggia and shading extensive outdoor living spaces.”
