“We absolutely love designing small spaces,” says Thorsteinsson. “It’s one of our favorite things.”

Steel-and-wood trellises provide relief from the sun. Abutting the canyon, the narrow backyard has just enough space for a pool, a terrace, and a handful of Ninix loungers by Royal Botania. “Sitting out there, having dinner with all the doors open—that’s all I really want,” says Will.

Modscape is an end-to-end company, however they will bring in outsdie consultants when necessary. The landscape and pool for this project were executed with the help of Bethany Williamson, Wickstead Works, and Gordon Ave Pools & Spas.

A blue checkered Moroccan rug amps up the visual interest in the space, along with a new yellow Togo couch and Herman Miller coffee table. Switching out the mullioned windows for new tilt-and-turn windows from Semko help the space feel larger and increase energy efficiency.

Danny envisioned the space between the ADU and the house as an informal place to gather. "It creates a sort of courtyard sensibility, which works for our intergenerational family dynamics."
